Who, who.

January 4, 2011 by Michelle Hinckley |

Yesterday I posted about this very cool owl lamp from West Elm (price $99.00) here.

I posed the idea of taking this owl I found at Goodwill for $3.99…

…which I sprayed white then wondered if I could make it in to a lamp.

One of my readers, Ashley, emailed me this fantastic Etsy find (price $45.00). Couldn’t believe it…same exact owl as mine. Just needs a coat of white paint.

Great find Ashley!

So you know, I checked out the Owl Lamp at West Elm a few weeks ago — it’s really poorly made. I’d definitely say you are better off getting it elsewhere and painting it. I think WE was just trying to hop on board with the trend, and they rushed the product as a result.

It’s very easy to make a lamp out of anything. You can buy the lamp kits at Lowes. Just use a bit made for ceramic in your drill. Drill a hole in the top, and at the bottom (for the cord), string cord thru the hole from the bottom to the top, and then attach to the electrical components in the base of the lamp kit (super easy, one wire to one side, the other wire to the other). And then screw it all together. Easy peasy and you’ve got a lamp for less than $20!

You know you can make anything into a lamp. All you need is some basic wiring skills and a few basic supplies.

yes, it can absolutely be done! just be careful with the drillbit you use to make the hole. i just made a lamp for class a few weeks ago and it was relatively easy. do it, do it, do it! 🙂

Go for it! Just be sure to buy a ceramic drill bit (like $9-15 at Home Depot). I suggest you may be able getting away using an existing lamp from Goodwill to put your creation together. Good luck!

You can do amazing things with a can of spray paint! And it isn’t too hard to wire your own lamp.

What is it about owls that’s so appealing? 🙂

I’m a little obsessed with owls myself! It would look great as a lamp. Any particular white spray paint you favor over another?
