Some very exciting installations happened at the house this week.
Most exciting – COUNTERS WENT IN and they are GORGEOUS!
While there were serious problems going on in the world I was staying up at night fretting about what counters to put in. As you may remember these were my options.
1st choice: Some kind of white marble.
2nd choice: White Quartzite.
3rd choice: Granite.
Last (and most practical at this point) choice: Formica.
Drum roll……
Statuary Grey Veined Marble from Italia Granite and fabricated by MGS.
For the island we went with a black Soapstone.
I’m in love.
(Just a sneak peak until all the cabinets drawers are in and the dust if off the floor).
After I blogged about the wrestle of a decision I was having,
a reader, Mariah, left a comment that helped seal my decision.
“We’re soul sisters, you and I. We are both mommies to three little boys. We both like pretty things. We are both fiercely attractive with great hair. (right? say it’s true. come on.) Sometimes a busy REAL life and pretty prettys are at odds… yup. So here is our big decision. Do we want to be the kind of people who lives safe? Who settle for the safe options in life because they don’t stain? Or… Do we get what we want and live following our hearts, recognizing that it isn’t always the safest option? Yes. I am waxing seriously philosophical about counters. It’s that kind of day. hmmm… whatever will we do??”
Mariah, you had me “great hair”! Thanks for the help and a good laugh.
I just love a good and thoughtful comment!
Here are some other fun things that went in.
Sconce from School House Electric. |
Pendants from Home Depot. |
Two weeks left, fingers crossed!

where was this comment about a month ago when I was wrestling with the same issue.I nearly chickened out and got quartz, but I knew I wouldn’t love it. It is a really hard decision to make but I too am going ahead with marble , carrara not very veined . My husband was very worried about getting marble but after compairing quartz and marble in person he immediately said marble for sure. I can not wait. We will have butcher block on the big island which we have now , it is fool proof. Enjoy your marble and soapstone , your house is looking gorgeous.

Hahaha I love Mariah’s comment. She is completely right. The Pendant lights are perfect too. Love retro.

oh my gosh! i’m loving everything about what you just posted. im always encouraging clients to go with what they love, rather than just picking khaki because it’s safe and whoever buys their house down the road will love it, etc. etc. life is too short for that mentality! anyway, adore it all, and i am very curious to see what the “22” is?! 🙂

I am so happy you went with marble!! I posted before (I have 3 boys and a very messy husband) and we have white marble in our kitchen. I love it. Does it stain? Not really. Does it etch? Definately. Does etching make it look ‘bad’? Absolutely not, anyways you can always re-finish it. There is nothing like it, no mand made material, granite, quartz can compare. It is absolutely stunning and it makes me happy everyday 🙂

Ahh, how I would love new countertops. I just finished painting my kitchen and all our cabinets though, so I need a break, haha. Yours look great!!

Great marriage of stones. I’m sure it’s going to be beautiful once it’s done.

Woo-hoo! Looks AMAZING. So glad you didn’t chicken out! 🙂 I won’t either. Pinky swear. Happy I could be helpful in your hour of need. When I’m up to my eyeballs in our kitchen remodel I’ll let you know and you can return the favor! 🙂

Oh I just LOVE them. And yes, that comment was hilarious. Thanks for sharing! I’m glad you got something so beautiful, you won’t be sorry I’m sure! The soapstone is really gorgeous too… adds great depth and contrast! Also…. I really love the tile job… the pennies mixed with the subway is really unexpected and fun! I love that they almost look like little polka dots, so fun!

Fabulous comment – and I’m glad it helped you. But honestly… I am speechless after seeing your marble countertops. I spend A LOT of time on the Marble Gurus blog (where I found you) and carrara marble gets me every time. I wanted it so badly for our kitchen and sadly, let my husband talk me out of it in favor of Corian’s rain cloud (made to “look” like carrara.) But 2 weeks ago I added a slab of carrara to our island because I REFUSED to live without it another moment – and now, Mr. Smartypants tells me he WISHES we’d gone with all marble in the first place. I could just wring his neck!
I have to go now… Speechless! Well done!

Hey! I realize this post is ages old, but I ran across it on Pinterest and am totally stealing your shower design – I love the subway tiles with hexagon in the built in shelving and gray grout. Do you happen to remember the name of the grout they used? Have you been happy with the dark color? I figure white would get stained or moldy so fast, but wonder if dark may also get discolored. Anyway, looks great!

Grout was pearl gray by Mapei. I’ve loved it so much I’ve used it in several other applications. I hate when light grout turns color so the pearl gray is perfect for disguising it. Hope that helps! 🙂

I’m not sure about destiny and all that…but something led me to you! I am literally in the beginning of our build. We are our own GC, and I have 1.2 million questions. Our footings for the foundation are being poured tomorrow. But that’s not what keeps me up at night, its what countertop to pick! and tile, and wall color, etc. So I gotta know, with 3 boys how is that soapstone turning out?! Its one of my options..but I’m so scared.

Hi Mandy, welcome to many sleepless nights, stress and emotional eating…the side effects of building a house. 🙂 I actually did 4-5 posts entitling, “Reviewing my own house” which is just my in-depth opinions 3 years after about the finishes I picked out. Here’s my review on the counters: https://4men1lady.com/reviewing-my-own-house-kitchen-counters/. If you just type, “Reviewing my own house” in the search box on the right, top of my blog you can see all the posts I wrote. Good luck with the home build. No doubt it’s stressful but when you move in it’s all worth it (most of the time). Good luck!
