Vintage Heywood Wakefield desk.

July 8, 2013 by Michelle Hinckley |

The only thing better than finding an awesome vintage piece is getting it for free!
That’s right folks.

My dad picked this desk up 30 -ish years ago when schools were discontinuing buying these models of desks and they had a small surplus left over.
I asked him why he bought it?
“I thought they were neat so I bought it.”
Nuff said.
(Apparently the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree).

It has been collecting dust in the basement for years.  When I was in college he was going to get rid of it to de-clutter but I protested.
I had no use for it at the time except I too thought it was neat.
Oooo, wait… Isn’t that what hoarders say? Ouch.
So it collected more dust in the basement for several more years.

Little did I know it would be making its debut years later as the newest/oldest nightstand for my little men.
“Didn’t she just post about a different nightstand for her sons a few weeks ago?” …you ask.
Yes, I did (I change furniture around as often as I change my outfits).

I mean, will you look at this thing!
How perfect is the minty blue and pale mustard combo?
Could you die!?

After a quick looksie on the internet I found other Heywood Wakefiled desks that range in price from $75. – $200.00.
Did I mention mine was F.R.E.E?
(Yep, that’s what one would call gloating).

Thanks dad!

I love your idea of using this vintage desk as a nightstand for your boys room. So clever and easy! A while back you bought a bunch of old desk chairs from a school auction (I think that’s where you mentioned you got them). I was at DI last week and they had some of those same chairs, I was so tempted to buy some, but I don’t have room for them. 🙁 I also found a couple of desks, but they weren’t as cool as yours is. Thank you for sharing, you always have such good ideas, and I love that you change out your decorations often.

NO WAY! I seriously have hoarding tendencies when it comes to old school furniture. Which DI was it? If it’s close I just might go check it out. Thanks for your kind words Allison! -Michelle 4men1lady.com

Ha I had desks just like that all thru elementary school. I’m vintage already?

I just found an old desk like this in someone’s garbage. One of the feet need replacing and it needs some, cleaning, tlc and possibly paint. I LOVE the color of your desk/ nightstand here. Is that the original color? Mine is dark brown. I’m thinking I may have to go with a color like yours. Thanks.
