Table progress.

May 18, 2011 by Michelle Hinckley |

Natty has been working hard on my table. She’s been so kind to give us a little update…

Michelle’s table is almost ready to be conditioned and stained! After stripping, I tried several tricks {laundry bleach then oxalic acid} to bleach the stain on the table legs, but to no avail. So it’s been lots of hand sanding for me!

I was unsuccessful in finding a stain the color Michelle is going for so I did a little research and decided that it woudn’t be too difficult to make my own water-based stain. I started by mixing black and white latex to get a basic gray, then I added a little brown for warmth. Once this was mixed I added water until I reached the desired consistency. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out and how easily it applied.

Only a couple more legs to sand and the table will be ready for my homemade stain 🙂

How exciting! I’m very interested in seeing the “final product,” which will be awesome I’m sure.

How interesting. Making your own stain with latex paint and water opens up new possibilities for me. I’m sure your new table will be stunning and unique when Natty finishes with it. Thanks for sharing.

WOW! its going to be amazing Im sure!! Its really hard to find good water-based stains -the colors are so limited. I recently did my dining room table and actually used Deck & Patio Stain-its oil based but the color selections are amazing!! and b/c its meant for outdoors I didnt have to add a protective layer (but I still did-cuz Im weird like that LOL)
Have a great day and I cant wait to see the finished product!

Love the grey/brown… I’ve been wondering how to achieve a grey weathered look… now I have some ideas… thanks for the inspiration!
