Stripes…Yay or Nay?

November 15, 2010 by Michelle Hinckley |

I have to admit I’m kind of over the whole striped wall trend. It seems like everyone (including me) has a striped wall. Yes, they are striking but they are EVERYWHERE which is wearing on their uniqueness. Despite my rant I have not been able to get these striped wing back chairs off my mind. I may be over striped walls but stripes on furniture…ooooo la la!

Can anyone name the source of that thick black and white stripe fabric?

Did I mention my other peeve is seeing design pics copied and pasted from one blog to another?
Sorry, this may be the 4th time you’ve seen these pics on other blogs.

Love love that chair…over stripes?! I still love them, but does this mean you’ll be painting over the stripes in your entry one of these days?! I can’t imagine that, after all that work! Janell

I actually posted these images on my blog last Wednesday and noted my source as marthastewart.com. I’m not sure who else posted them, and I don’t know the fabric source. Wish I did because it’s fabulous.

    Hey Michelle!

Ive copied these same pictures about 10 times in my design files. Although they are everywhere…none of my non-design friends will know the difference. I have a source for the fabric. I dont have it right off hand…but my friend Bryn Alexander…has it on her blog…take a look.

Definitely a yay for stripes. I dont know who makes that fabric, but Ikea has a great upholstery weight black and white striped fabric with thinner stripes — for $2 a yard you can’t beat it!

I love stripes on anything from walls to furniture to pillows, they are timeless. Yes, you see a lot of striped walls on the blogosphere and in magazines, but not everyone reads these. When new friends visit my home for the first time they always rave about my striped dining room walls as if I were the genius who invented the idea.

Yes I love the chairs as well , as for the fabric they could not find the perfect fabric so she mad it herself by piecing together two different fabrics.

I agree with Karen…although we bloggers see alot of stripes, I dont think your everyday run of the mill Suburban family is in on that trend…or even knows it exists.
Does this mean you’ll be painting over your hallway walls? I LOVE it with the stripes

I don`t really know where`s the fabric at in those pictures but I got similar fabric from IKEA!
You can get them in many different colors, like yellow/white, black/white, blue/white…
It is perfect for upholstery projects.
I`ve got four big old chairs and that would be a new striped project;)
    Stripes everywhere like you said;)
    Lovely greetings…

premier prints carries a wide black and white stripe.
and i think stripes are always IN.
i totally get what you are saying about seeing them around too much…but i think if you love something, it’s always “in”.

personally, I’m obsessed with stripes. everywhere.

    love love love the chair.

my take on the striped wall: same color, different finishes. I’m painting the whole wall with an eggshell finish and taping out stripes in a high gloss. subtle, yet they’re still there 🙂

I too love this home! I’ve seen it around a few blogs, and I’m pretty sure that I read the same as the anoymous blogger wrote, that she couldn’t find a wide enough stripe so she made her own by sewing together separate black and white fabrics making stripes. I prefer the wide stripes over thin ones. I’m contemplating stripes for our bathroom and was thinking more of spin might be on the ceiling instead of walls (although that may be very tricky and difficult) or I have a photo from lonny that I absolutely love where the horizontal stripes vary in width.

LOVE stripes. Don’t love how much they are loved by everyone else. These chairs are great and not overdone at all! One of my fabric resources has an 8″ wide stripe (http://www.texassusannie.com/Wide-Stripe-Black-White_p_990.html). Less than $8 a yard!!

Do what you love! I just painted stripes on my wall in my kitchen and I’m digging it. Trend or not…I love it! : )

When I saw these chairs awhile back I immediately thought of this website-
    http://www.texassusannie.com/

This is where I ordered the fabric for the couch I recovered and I loved it. I have ordered other fabric from them as well- much better than any local store, and the pricing is great. Here are the stripes I thought of…

    http://www.texassusannie.com/Wide-Stripe-Black-Natural_p_1137.html

Each stripe is 8″ wide – that is pretty massive!!

I’ve been thinking the same thing too. Every blog I frequent, I’m pretty much seeing the same thing. I know that everyone likes to recreate the “in” thing, but it seems like all of bloggy land is doing the same thing. I could probably condense my google reader from following 30 blogs to about 8. I hope some new ideas start flowing soon cause it’s getting kind of….er…boring.

p.s. sorry you didn’t win the job thing-a-ma-jiggy last week. I voted for you everyday!

That chair was in a magazine article. Cannot think of it off-hand right now. When I get home, I will look it up. The fabric is Sunbrella and it is seamed from white and black fabrics because the designer or homeowner could not find striples in the width she wanted. Hope this helps.

I hope you don’t paint over the stripes!
I still think they are great but I don’t have any in my home so no chance of getting sick of them. Those chairs are amazing! Making me regret the floral pattern I chose for the chair at the upholsterer as we speak!

I posted these pics on my blog last week. Even though stripes may be a trend online, I don’t believe the average household is full of them, so they will work for a long time. On fabric, I think stripes is classic and will always be in style one way or another. Premier Fabrics has this fabric…

Very cute! Calico Corners has a similar stripe shown here in a 13.5″ repeat in white and navy.

I have tried to get my upholster to cover a wing in stripes so many times and he will not do it! He says it is too hard and that wind chairs have all the curves. I might have to show him this picture now! I think he is just lazy!

I don’t care how trendy they have become. I have an obsession. Although, its not even 100% stripes, as it is any graphic black and white pattern. While I love the striped walls, and upholstered furniture and pillow, and in any colour might i add…i am also just SO drawn to black and white prints, and the stripe seems to be so simple and elegant. I llove love love my black and white striped walls, and i would paint the whole house that way if i were allowed.
I instantly fell in love with this living room when i came across this photos recently – and then i realized…MY SON’S NURSERY IS EXACTLY THE SAME CONCEPT. score. I love it even more now, and am even happier with myself. Black and white stripes, worn brown leather tufted chesterfield, and gold accents. Maybe more bachelor pad than nursery – but i like it like that.
