Now that we’re thick in to the school year we’ve settled in nicely to a homework routine.
Our little homework station has prevented us from being buried by the mountain of paperwork and assisted to make homework time more happy.
Today I had the opportunity to elaborate more about this little project on Studio 5.
On a different note, If you’ve been following Studio 5 this past month they’ve started a movement called the Body Love Challenge.
The idea is to get people to stop talking about what they hate about their bodies and focus on what they love instead.
At first I was on the “meh” train.
But something must have shifted because today I started in on my ritualistic flaw picking which generally accompanies my Studio 5 appearances.
I stopped myself.
I realized how much damage I was doing to myself when I started down that road.
Hard as it was I decided to pick one thing I loved about myself instead.
I love my hair!
I got to thinking, when someone says in a group, “I hate my big thighs” every person in that group unconsciously makes a mental note, “Big thighs=bad”.
Then it becomes of vicious cycle of self loathing every time you look down, even though you may not have ever given any thought to your thighs.
For some reason we tend to adopt other people’s criticisms of themselves and own them as our own.
Must be careful of what we say about ourselves in front of others.
Despite my earlier reservations about the Body Love Challenge I now think it’s not only a positive thing for ourselves but for our society as a whole.
So what’s your most favorite thing about yourself?
Check out Studio 5 for more info on joining in on the #bodylovechallenge!

Whoa! I always pictured you with short hair, like your avatar! I actually have pretty good body love (and FYI my body is far from “perfect”!). I think I like my eyes, chest (lol!), and legs the best.

Yes, I need to change my headshot on my blog…my hair has grown quite a bit. Good on ya girl with the body love! Sounds like you’ve got a really healthy self image! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

I love this post! I want to be better at this for the sake of my children as well. I don’t want them to grow up being critical of themselves because they have heard me gripping about how I look.
I was just scrolling through your posts and saw that you are thinking about making an upholstered bed. My husband and I just made one. The headboard was pretty easy but the bed frame was a bit trickier. I posted a tutorial on my blog a few weeks ago if you want to check it out. I haven’t finished the bed frame tutorial portion yet but hopefully will soon.

Hot dang girl! Love that your first sentence was that it was SO MUCH FUN to make! You go! That is amazing. And it totally looks just like the one I want to do. Navy blue with brass nail head trim! Great minds think alike. I’ve done three upholstered headboards before but I’ve never attempted the frame. I’m ANXIOUSLY awaiting your tutorial. Did I stress, ANXIOUSLY?! When do you think you’ll have it up. (Can you tell I’m just about to head to Home Depot?). 🙂 Thanks Hollie!

Haha! I am such a slacker with finishing that post… The main reason I haven’t finished it is because I can’t find my notes with the measurements. That was by far the trickiest part, making sure the mattress fits inside the frame and that the frame fits perfectly in-between the arms of the headboard. Does that make sense?? Basically you want the headboard(plywood part) minus the width of both of the arms to be the same width as the frame. That way the frame will fit between the two arms. We made the headboard minus the arms to be about 3 inches larger than our mattress on both sides. Basically, you want the plywood for the headboard to be around 6 inches wider than your mattress. Here is an awesome link to a tutorial I kind of followed http://www.viewalongtheway.com/2011/07/diy-platform-bed-upholstering-the-platfor/
I did a few things differently than them, but for the most part pretty close to the same. I used one long piece of fabric rather than three. I didn’t want any seems. It costs more that way, but it was worth it for me. And I used 2 inch boards for the frame, I think they used 1inch. I liked the thicker look. Anyway, good luck! I can’t wait to see it!!

The other thing you have to take into consideration is how tall the frame will be with the legs you choose. It needs to be able to slide under the plywood portion of the headboard so that the back of the frame and the back of the headboard are flush. That way you can secure the headboard to the frame by drilling 1×4’s or 1×2’s (whatever you have available) from the frame to the headboard. Sorry, I know I’m probably not making much sense.. 🙂

It’s been a busy week and I’m just catching up on my favourite blogs. Have to tell you I love this post. Years ago I was very self-critical. Every time I started to put myself down, my fiancé would interrupt me by saying “You’re beautiful.” It took a bit of time, but I eventually stopped being so mean to and about myself and he never stopped telling me I was beautiful. I learned that if I talk about something, it becomes the centre of attention. Don’t talk about what you don’t like and nobody will. Today, my family and friends would tell you that I love my crazy curly hair but they wouldn’t be able to tell you what I don’t like about myself! In fact, I wouldn’t be able to tell you either! Stay positive about everything about yourself, even the bits you don’t like!

Thanks Heather! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your story. Such a testament to the power of self talk. I think we all need to get off the negative talk train and start talking positive. Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Hugs!
