Quite a scare.

March 27, 2012 by Michelle Hinckley |

Yesterday my 4 year old woke up with excruciating pain in his leg and hip.
It was painful enough that he couldn’t even bend his leg to sit up.

On the way out door I kept my distance so not to add to the hysteria.

We couldn’t figure it out since he had been bouncing around right before he went to bed the night before.

At the hospital we learned nothing was broken but quite a bit of fluid had accumulated in his hip causing the pain called Transient Synovitis.  Apparently it’s quite common with 3% of kids having an episode between the ages of 3-6 yrs old.  The cause is unknown.
They put him under then took a gigantic needle that drained the fluid from his hip.
An overnight stay at the hospital, video games, slushies, Spider Man cartoons…”this hospital is not so bad.”
24 hours later my little man is back home.  He’s walking like a grandpa but on the road to recovery.
You’re never so grateful for your children’s health and good hospitals until you have a health scare.

I’m so happy that your baby is ok, it’s always frightening when your kids are sick. Last year I had a scare with my son and we ended up at the oncologist office. That scared the #%$#&* out of me. Thank God it was just mono.

There is nothing like the pain of your children to send a Momma’s worry level through the roof. After raising three sons, I thought I had experienced everything, but apparently I had not. This one would have taken me to my knees, that’s for sure. So thankful for modern medicine and a strong-hearted boy and mom!

I am so happy to hear he is okay! This happened to my nephew last year and gave my sister (a nurse) quite a scare.. then just last week the same thing happened to my friend’s daughter! I was happy to be able to ease her worry that it could be just that before she headed to the doctor. Scary stuff! Makes you count your blessings!

My heart feels for you. I had to rush my 4 month old (now 5 years old) to the children’s hospital because his platelets were so low. His count was 2000 and normal is between 150,000-400,000. My husband was out of town but thank goodness my mom was with me. We were on the hematology/oncology floor and home within a few days. Seeing those poor kids made me realize someone always has it worse. I hope your little one is back to jumping on his bed in no time!!

Oh gosh, I’m glad he is ok! I would have been terrified. My 6 year old head butted my 7 year old in the mouth and oh my goodness… The first time I had to deal with stitches… As a fellow mom of 3 boys, it rough!

So glad all is well with him! There is nothing like a scare to make you re evaluate and count your blessings. My 6 year old had to have a colonoscopy earlier this year because he was passing blood. It turned out to be a benign juvienal polyp that happens to 3% of kids- but OMG the waiting period. Give him a big hug- and I love the DIY stitcher.

I’m glad he’s doing okay. Mom sent around an email telling us what happened and how cute he was at the hospital. I’m glad he’s doing okay and that it wasn’t anything too serious. As soon as he’s ready to play again, let us know because Bryson has been begging me the last few days to play at your house. He’s dying to play with the boys. 🙂

Oh, Michelle! I know how difficult this was … our 5-month-old daughter was in ICU last week with RSV, and even though you know your child is coming home with you, it’s still stressful! Hope all the discomfort is gone and this will all be a distant memory soon … although it sounds like he was a total champ. 😉

I am so glad he is ok now. Health problems are one of the worst nightmares of any parent. My boss’ kid had the same problem a couple of months ago, so I know first hand it is relatively common. Fortunately it went ok easily. hugs.

Oh my goodness, so scary! Glad he’s doing well now. We use our Children’s Hospital on a regular basis to keep our daughter’s diabetes in check. She is nearly 16 and was just diagnosed a couple of years ago. Never had to use Children’s Hopital before then but I’ve found they are quite amazing these last 2 yrs.

    Praying for fast healing!
