I have wanted My boys have wanted a playhouse for ever now.
If you saw my segment on Studio 5 last Friday you witnessed Brooke call out the Mr. about helping me build a playhouse on live tv (with no provoking from me…Brooke I owe you)!
The playhouse building has been on the project agenda since the beginning of the summer and things keep getting in the way
(like fear and hesitation).
We have a fair amount of building experience and a lot of ego that makes up for the skills we lack that help us figure it out as we go.
However, this playhouse is proving to have us shaking in our boots (just a little).
I called a few contractors to see how much it would cost to just have them come build it for us but the price with around $3000.-$5000.
Yeah, no.
So back to the DIY drawing board.
The tides may be turning this week. A family friend contractor is coming over this week to do some odds and ends. I’m treating the opportunity to use him as our advisor to give us advice and direction. I’ve done my homework and had Blue Stakes come and mark all utility lines with their pretty orange spray paint on the grass so we don’t blow ourselves up when we dig. I’ve also called the city to make sure I don’t need a permit as well as follow all height and measurement requirements for an outside structure and setbacks from the house. We’re in the green and ready to get our build on.
The playhouse is going to be a little tricky because it’s going in the corner of the yard so will be a triangular shape.
It may be an epic fail or huge success.
I’m anticipating lots of sweat, frustration and head scratching. For sure there will be the usual project-arguing that breaks out between my sweet love and myself, especially a project of this magnitude. At any rate I’m confident it will be worth it in the end and be a place for my little men to call their own and create many happy memories.
In the meantime, here’s a few inspirational ideas I’ve been gathering…
Kind of makes you wish you were a kid again!

I love the idea of the second to the last (with higher rails on top!). You can make some of your cute drapes for them to close up the under-the-platform area if they want to have a private place or for a sleepover. (Looks a little bit more manageable than some of the others!)

Home Depo has some great how to books that go through building walls and roofs. My husband who is pretty handy used it a lot when we were working on our basement. He even learned how to lay carpet using it! May be worth looking into. They all look really cute. I like the tree house type ones but they would be harder than one that sits on the ground.

I love this! I think you should have an “open house” once its finished. That just gives us adults an excuse to play…..I mean check it out!!! 😉
