Pink…sophisticated or girly?

September 5, 2012 by Michelle Hinckley |

I’m in love with the color pink. In fact, I have a whole board on Pinterest dedicated to the color. I’m seriously toying with the idea of painting some piece of furniture or reupholstering a wingback in a hot fuchsia. I don’t want it to end up like my Jerry Maguire striped wall though and end up regretting it. The other issue is that I live with 4 men who think the color pink is synonymous with girls only. So funny because I think boys dressed in pink is dream but they think the color will give them cooties.
So what do you think…is pink sophisticated or girly?

So what do you think?
Anyone ever used pink other than in a little girls room with success?
Is pink girly or sophisticated chic?

I LOVE pink! I have a pink bathroom and love it (just the walls) and use pink throughout my house.

I think pink can be girly, but in all of the pictures you’ve shown it definitely looks smart and sophisticated….not girly at all.

I think it depends on the shade & how much( & what ) is pink- I don’t think girly – I have flash backs to the late 80’s & early 90’s- Though the photos you’ve selected are very glam -not dated ( or Barbie doll)

I say go for it! I have two boys and a girl and tried to keep their bathroom gender neutral. However, there was this pink rug that never got returned and needed a home, so I stuck it in their bathroom waiting for some groans…but not a peep out of those boys. Just do it! You deserve a little “lady” in the 4 men 1 lady house;).

I think in the right shade, and on the right piece it is absolutely stunning! The bright pink headboard…*swoon*

Pink can totally be non-girly done in the right way! Nicole @ Making It Lovely uses it well. I say go for it, you deserve a little girl in a house full of men! =]

I agree you deserve a little pink! Most of everything in my home is the same as yours. White couches and chairs that I love, grey and white walls. I use pillows and accents for all my color because it can be changed to easiy. So if the hubs hates it and cannot live you didnt break your bank! 🙂
    P.s.- LOVE the bathroom!

I love it too and I think it can be both, especially the way you have shown these.

I love pink, but unfortunately my husband doesn’t, ha! He’s okay with a few pink accents here and there around the house, and I think that’s a great way to go without it being overkill.

I’m sorry, but I think pink is for girls and our gay friends. With 4 men in the house I’d have to say no.
Put in a place that’s just for you.

one statement item like you show in your pictures would be chic, not girly (your striped wall just needed a few black/navy stripes to be perfect)

I was a girl once, know I am a sophiscated women who loves pink!!! If we love something having the confidence to surround ourselves with it makes us sophiscated!

I have a style that lends itself more towards a masculine style, so to be honest, you probably wouldn’t find a ton of pink in our main living spaces. BUT I think it can be really sophisticated, especially if it’s just a pop here or there. Even a man’s man can handle one spot of pink, right?

It’s funny cuz I used to wonder about the same thing. Always wanting to add that little hint of pink in a room. But the hubby always said it would look Dumb. Well I finally did it! AND we ALL love it. Or at least I get a “it’s OK” out of the hubby. 🙂 I posted pics of my Living Room on my blog. 🙂

    The Facts of Pink

I am ALL about pink, but – TO BE FAIR, Home is a place inhabited by the family and we cannot decorate for ONE in a space where EVERYONE will live. The agreement/understanding is this: ‘I won’t ask to use pink and you can’t ask to use that puke shade of (name your enemy color) that you love so much.’

Pink is best reserved for clothing, suede high heels, sandals, polish for your toenails, lipstick, an incredible clutch bag, a shiny rain slicker and matching umbrella…

If you feel the requirement to express your ‘inner pink’, whatever the shade, it is best used as an accent color – if you use pink be very careful of the shade you choose – suggestions are fuchsia and the palest of pink (‘Theatre Pink’ – the color used on ballet toe shoes)

Suggestions: Flowers in a vase – Pillows – a throw for a chair in your bedroom (the Mr. simply will not touch it) – a stool used in either your bedroom or your master bath – where you dress or apply cosmetics – consider a design which has an ‘X’ designed base rather than a Parson’s design base – the ‘X’ is more masculine (symbolizes ‘strength’) and a fuchsia fabric (suede, linen, etc) on this shape will create quite a POP!

I love pink, at least I do now. I always seem to fall in love with current color trends, because truth be told I am a color-phile.

I think pink (particularly the raspberry tone) is trendy right now. Is trendy bad? Nope. I would just be aware, and ready to change that statement/accent piece easily so you are ready to take on the next trend.

You have an amazing eye, and are a talented decorator. Thanks for sharing your inspired blog.

I also live in a home of 4 men and 1 lady and I think you better avoid the pink. I took over a small room for my studio and it is painted a light pink, but that’s as far as I will go. That said. . . our school color is purple, so that is considered more manly. We have a purple carpet in our family room that everyone loves!

In my last house I painted my kitchen pink (sherwin williams quaint peche) I loved it and thought it looked vintage and cool. My husband was in the army at the time and a girlfriend asked me how my husband “let” me paint my kitchen pink. I told her I do the painting (and the cooking) so he didn’t have much to say about it. If you like it go for it!
