I have a spot.
And I spend more time there than any other spot on earth.
A lot of things happen at this spot.
Not only do I prepare meals but I serve meals AND eat my meals standing in this spot.
This long stretch of dirty, dented and worn kitchen floor is MY spot.
A command central of sorts.
Besides cooking and eating, I council with my family, pray, dance, entertain guests, blog, sometimes yell, help with homework…all at this spot.
I’m a mother and this is my spot. I love that I have a spot. My life’s most important work is being lived and recorded in this very spot.
My spot is getting a new outfit to cushion my tired feet.
I’ve been searching for a new area rug for 2 years that would be perfect for my spot.
It’s due to arrive any day but I’m so darn excited I had to share.
I’ll share pics of my new area rug as soon as it gets here…but until then here’s a sneak peak.
Do you have a “spot”?

You are so sweet! I’m in love with how your shore house is turning out! When can I book my reservation?
Celeste says
I have a spot but after seeing yours I’m feeling kinda lazy because mine is a chair, ha-ha! Pretty rug, by the way.
Michelle Hinckley says
LOL! I would love to spend more time in a spot like that relaxing!

I don’t have a spot yet, but I need one and I need one of those rugs too ๐
Michelle Hinckley says
Medallion Rugs has a fab selection!

I love this post. The fact that it included “pray…” and “…sometimes yell” made it honest and highlighted the pendulum swing of motherhood. ๐ That is a fantastic rug too!
Michelle Hinckley says
Thanks Valerie, I almost omitted the “yelling” bit but I thought…I don’t know one parent who hasn’t yelled a time or two. You put it so perfectly when you said the “pendulum swing of motherhood”! Spot on gal! Thanks for your comment!

That’s a great spot. Open concept kitchens really lend themselves well to being the ‘hub’ of the house. If only I could tear down the wall between by kitchen and dining room!
Michelle Hinckley says
Tearing down walls was the best thing we did! Would do it ten times over. Thanks Charlotte!

Hi!!
I love your spot, the kitchen is so gorgeous, I will always be drawn to black and white!! I also consider my kitchen my spot! And I love the new rug, I also used a similar rug for y b&w kitchen!! I used a Persian runner my mom gave me!!
Keep enjoying your spot!
Have a nice week!

I just got the rug and have been loving it. The kitchen is so neutral that the pop of color with the rug is a welcomed addition! Thanks Ozana!

I have all soapstone countertops. How do you keep your’s looking so good? How often do you oil it and then how do you keep it even when the oil starts fading?
Michelle Hinckley says
I don’t oil them as much as I like and they do end up looking a little chalky after a while. But with all the cooking, food oil, boys crawling all over them I suppose they get natural oils (he! he!). I have loved my counters and haven’t regretted them for an instant! Now my marble counters…hmmmm…
Shelby says
So what you’re saying is yours are like mine and these look their best b/c you’re photographing them for the blog? I love mine too and I have A LOT of counter space including a huge island. Mine don’t get oiled as much as they should either but about a week after I oil them is when they are my favorite. I love the variety about them and how unique they are. Thanks! I always wonder what others with soapstone do. Sounds about the same as me! If you ever try any other products (they make some sort of longer term methods) be sure to blog about it.
Michelle Hinckley says
Yep, pretty much. I thought I’d have to oil them all the time but to be honest, we’ve had them two years now and I’ve only oiled them twice. People keep saying that I had to oil them to bring out their beauty but I think they are just as beautiful not oiled. I also figure, they were never oiled when they were apart of the earth so it’s not a big deal to me. I have unconditional love for them. I’m actually planning a post on everything kitchen soon. I’ll be sure to mention my soapstone.
Thanks Shelby!

I thought maybe you’d choose a kitchen rug more like http://www.FLOR.com cuz they are so COOL and CREATIVE and very ECO! I just bought some for my kitchen and also my mom’s kitchen, and they are super neat, made in the USA, and take alot of wear and tear. :)))) Janice
Michelle Hinckley says
Hi JaniceMarie, FLOR is SOOO cool, I agree. I might have to find a place to put some in my house. Got lots more spaces to fill! ๐
