These babies are now mine thanks to my good friend Craig…(‘s list). (Shhh…don’t tell my husband, I sometimes check him out twice a day). The color and fabric are all wrong but they are in pristine condition.
I’ve spent much time debating what to do with them. The cheapeast option would be to slipcover them…yawn. Been there, done that. Most my furniture is slipcovered.
Next option is to re-upholster them. Too bad it’s so stinkin’ expensive. I’ve even strongly considered DIY’ing them. Crazy talk, I know. Too difficult with two little men running circles around me all day.
Listen to this. Did you know that many prisons have apprentice programs that teach inmates a trade? Upholstery is one of them. They charge about a third of what it would normally cost. Turn around time is 30 days. Sounds a little iffy but I heard their work is excellent! They also offer other services such as sandblasting, powdercoating, metalfab, wood working, etc. This morning I called my Arizona Correctional Industries and had them email me all the info. Check back with me in a month and we’ll see how they turned out.
I actually love the color of the chairs, they are gorgeous! I wish I had a formal living room to display pretty furniture like that. I can’t wait to see what you decide to do to them!
i CANNOT WAIT to see the after of these babies! i don’t know much about prison programs but it sounds like a great solution, i would go for it!
Wow, that’s really cool… can’t wait to hear what you find out.
PS: just featured you again on my blog! Thanks!
ooh will you do a pattern? I bet you could do it, especially after seeing those beautiful headboards you made for your boys!

Also looking forward to how inmates do it. I’m going to ask my Dad if they do that at his prison.
Michelle…
My aunt works at the jail here in SLC, and she said the prision her does that. (they eve have a garden that she purchases produce from…. talk about iffy) any way I hear that they are actually really quite good. Nothing that an orange uniform and a shank wont cure…REHAB BABY! cant wait to see!
You have given me an itch for some wingback chairs! Also, I saw this today and thought of you, I guess Pier 1 is rumored to be going out of buisness at the end of the year? They are having a big sale!

Hello, I had to leave a comment for you because you have such an incredible blog with an eye-catching and creative header shot! Beautiful pictures and writing; I’ve been really absorbed reading your posts. Thank you for sharing them and best wishes….
Such great finds!! I’m really excited to see how the inmates do on them!
Also, I just left you and award on my personal blog, Wedded Whims. ๐
I can’t wait to see what you do with them. I think having them re-upholstered would definitely be worth it. That is interesting about the prisoners doing upholstery. I had no idea!
Hi Michelle. I just sent you an e-mail yesterday. Just wanted to make sure you got it.
I can’t wait!! I bet I am just as excited to see them as you are! ๐
I bet you can do it yourself, now that you have that big studio. It took me a month, but the taking off part took me a couple of hours and after that I just didn’t know what fabric to use and then I waited for them to be on sale (60% sale at Joann’s) I went with simple because I’m doing a sofa later. Also if you DIY it you can also check the foams and choose how stuffed you want it. Any questions, I’m more than happy to help. You can also check my journal to see the step by step of my chairs.
Good luck,
Margarita
i need to find me a prison STAT. I have two rust colored chairs in my living room MOCKING me.
Any news on these?! I’m dying to know what happened!
Sooo….I didn’t notice it elsewhere, did the prison upholstery work out?
I’ve been playing catch-up on your blog ๐ I had never heard about this..good to know!
