The story of our master bedroom is a story about a room that just can’t get done.
It’s a room that just keeps getting pushed lower and lower on the to-do priority list.
Unfortunately, I’m not the type of person who does just a temporary decorating fix until the master plan comes together.
Oh no. The pretty bed is sold as it the yellow dresser, night stands, art, lamps…it’s all gone.
I’m an all or nothin’ type of gal.
I thought if I had a blank canvas to work with it would light a fire under me. Our bedroom now looks like a college dorm room with our box spring sitting on the carpet.
It doesn’t help that when I painted the three paneled walls months ago I thought I’d be funny and write “yo” on the 4th wall with my last bit of remaining paint. It’s the little lame-o tad of rebellion I have in me.
Why?
I don’t know.
It’s not a word I use in my everyday vocabulary.
Paint fumes got to me I guess. I was on my way to run to the paint store for more paint but then the reality of life with three little men happened and who the heck has time to finishing painting a room with three little men under foot?
As a result…”YO” is the first word we see in the morning and the last word we see at night (for the past 6+ months).
And the Mr.? There’s not much that bothers him but he’s so beyond sick of the “YO”.
Sometimes when he calls I’ll pick the phone up with a “YO” or greet him at the door with a kiss and a “YO”. Sometimes I’ll even double up and be like “Yo-Yo” just to see how hard of an eye roll I can elicit from him.
My new plan was to wallpaper this fourth wall with grass cloth. I have been back to the darn wallpaper store 4 times now. This last visit the lady had my order in the computer and my debit card was in hand. When I said, “WAIT”. Cold feet. AGAIN.
I went home wondering if I should go out completely out on a limb and do something totally different with a dash of masculinity. Completely panel the wall in wood. Not a pallet wall or wood flooring wall. Something more like:

Go for it? Big mistake? I wouldn’t even know where to go to get this?
“I’d like one large wood wall please.”
We did make one exciting addition yesterday:
It’s called the Vega 3 Chandelier from School House Electric. Please excuse the ugly bulbs. We’re waiting some cool Edison-esque bulbs via snail-mail.
So there it is. My bedroom conundrums.
Hopefully in three more years I’ll have a room reveal to share with you.
In the meantime, I’m busy trying to figure out how to be a parent and get dinner on the table before 9pm and find my keys.
Input please.

You sold that beautiful bed?!! I’m very shocked, especially since that leaves your mattress on the floor lol. I’m curious about why you’d do that when it was so neutral? It seems like it would go with whatever you choose to do to your room. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with 🙂
I’m still working on a consistent routine as an adult without kids… so I can’t help you with the last bit that much lol. Maybe you can start with dropping your keys at that beauitful entry of yours. That’s what I do, and I’m successful at keeping tabs on my keys… most of the time.

Yep, sold it. It was a beautiful bed but it felt clunky in our now much smaller bedroom. It visually took up too much room and wall space. So now I’m planning on building a smaller bed. Stay tuned! Thanks Mandy!

If I help find your keys, will you help find my checkbooks? Seriously. I hid 2 BOXES of new checks so they didn’t get scribbled on by little hands, and 6 months later I have no idea where they are. When I was hiding them, I seem to remember thinking, “Sarah, you are never going to remember where you put these.” By golly I was right!
I like the wood wall idea, and I think it would be stunning with the new light. I think most of those installations are just veneered plywood – the bookmatching they’ve done would be nearly impossible otherwise.

I am a child of the 70s, so I cannot get on board with any kind of wood paneling!! I love the white squares on the other wall.
As for my keys, I have a clip on the inside of my purse, so they are always clipped in there. That seems to help. Good luck!

i think that would look lovely, and grown-up and sophisticated. but, I also have no idea where to go…I’m guessing you need very large sheets of veneer…

LOL…YO!

I love your idea to panel your wall with wood. The first inspiration picture is my favorite! I did a quick google search, perhaps this might help?

You are AWESOME!!! Thank you!

You can buy 4’x8′ sheets of 1/8″ stainable plywood at Home Depot or Lowes. That’s what I would do. You can also get actual wood paneling that clicks together meant for walls, but it’s thicker and would be a lot more 70s than sheets of wood. Have you seen this? http://makelyhome.com/diy-herringbone-wood-paneled-wall/ It’s pretty awesome, I think. Could you find a wood veneer like wallpaper? Good luck! I always love what you end up doing in your house.

Listen, girlfran, I LOVE your style but I can’t get on bored with the wood paneling. I think it’ll be quickly passing trend. Don’t you think a master bedroom is the hardest place to design??? Ours needs a makeover but I haven’t a clue where to start.
Good luck! I’m excited to see your new space.

I just went on a tour of the conference center, downtown SL, and fell hard for the pear wood paneled walls. I’m sure it’s not cheap, but wowsers if it’s not beautiful. Great color, great grains.

They ARE beautiful aren’t they! I so want to do them. 🙂

Whyyyyy is the master bedroom always the last one for an update?!? It’s the same in our houses. We’ve been in our current house for a year, and for heaven’s sake, we still have unpacked boxes sitting on our floor! The room is HUGE, and you’d think I could pull the trigger on a big piece of bold art or something, but every time I get to the checkout, I panic! So I’m with you, sister. Yo.
Michelle Hinckley says
WHY! WHY! WHY! I need a master bedroom fairy to sprinkle some magic dust on that room. 🙂

I love wood pallet walls and wondered if one day I’d look at them like wood paneling that still exists in a good number of “finished basements” where I live. I don’t know if I am all in on the images you showed there. The thing is, I also used to loathe chevron…. now I have a chevron stencil wall in my bathroom. So maybe my style hasn’t ripened to the wood paneling yet. I think it’s the color, too – that yellowy wood is very mid-century modern with a dose of 70’s chic, but… no, thanks. (not yet anyway).
I do love the embellishment on the wall adjacent to the Yo! wall. That rocks. So what to do with the Yo wall (aside from wood paneling of some sort)? I do love some modern wallpapers – expensive, difficult to install and a PIA to remove, but very nice if you find the right one, so happy hunting! What about an art installation? Old photos of famous bedrooms as a gallery wall idea? Framed family heirlooms (blankets, clothing, jewelry….) What about a phrase, a line, a chorus, a poem, a lullaby painted out – not like vinyl letters, but very large covering the wall (maybe different fonts – really covering the whole wall) and done in similar paint tones to the background – maybe playing with high gloss paint or even metallic paints so it almost looks like some magic lettering that shows up in different places depending on the lighting????
Ah, well…. as for the keys… since I pull into the garage via an opener, I’ve taken to just leaving my keys in the car all the time. They’re safely in the garage in an unlocked car and I haven’t lost my keys in a couple years now. My hubs hates it – but hey – it works for me…..
Good luck with the Master!

How thick is your square moulding? As in, how thick are the boards? I got a zillion feet of trim for a song, and am trying to decide what to use it for, and if it is too thick to use vertically. What did you use for base on that wall? Love, love, love!
Michelle Hinckley says
Width of boards is 3 inches and inside of each square is 19 inches. 🙂
