Hudson Bay Blanket

September 11, 2015 by Michelle Hinckley |

O Canada.
How we love thee.
You’ve given us Ryan Gosling, maple syrup and hockey.
How can we ever thank you?
But I have to say, in my humble opinion, one of your best additions ever was the Hudson Bay Wool Blanket
(blanket traded by the Hudson Bay company between Canada and North America in 18-19th century).
It has influenced design (and warmed cold toes) around the world.

Yesterday, after I dropped my last little man off at his first day of preschool,

me and my teary-eyed self wandered around town until it was time to pick him back up and see if he survived.
You can imagine my excitement when I found a vintage Hudson Bay Blanket at a consignment shop in my wanderings.
It was like a consoling gift from Heaven.

For now it’s hanging out on my son’s bed…

but oh the possibilities…

Here are some different versions of the classic Hudson Bay Wool Blanket.

1. The Bay.
2. Faribault.
3. Pendleton.
4. Woolrich.

P.S. My little man did great on his first day.  For the past 11+ years I’ve been at home raising three little men.
I’m emotional seeing this sweet time come to an end but I’m immensely excited to see what this new chapter holds!

We also owe them props for Tim Hortons! Thank you, Canada, for the Sour Cream Timbits! I love those blankets too.

You’re welcome, eh? The “boot room blanket” as it was always called in our prairie farmhouse in the wilds of Canada is a classic and it always makes me smile when I see it get some high-horse treatment in decor. Just so you know, we also gave you basketball, William Shatner (sorry) and Jim Carrey (really sorry). We also apologize a lot. Sorry.

Ha! I love someone with a good sense of humor. Yes, Canada gave all those “other” things too. Apology accepted. 🙂

Thanks for the Canada love! My husband painted a print of the HBC colours that was in our living room for a long time, and is now in my sister in law’s place. Love our point blankets!

On behalf of Canada, you are very welcome. The Hudson’s Bay blankets really are a Canadian icon. That is an amazing thrift find. I’m jealous. My son’s bed also has one on his, it goes with the hockey theme (of course)!

Michelle – The Bay stores have quite an extensive selection of goods with that classic stripe. You would love it!
Don’t forget salt and vinegar chips and butter tarts :).
