How to create a succulent planter.

February 26, 2016 by Michelle Hinckley |

Every room needs a touch of greenery.
Not only do plants interject life in to a room but they also act as a natural air purifier (so the lady at the greenhouse told me).
I don’t deny that my green thumb is black. I’m an over-waterer.
But with a little education I’ve managed to keep 6 plants in my house alive for over a year.
I think that should somehow qualify me as having graduated from novice status.

I’ve started collecting cool and unique planters.  My latest additions are these handcrafted ceramics from Fab.com.

They are the perfect way to brighten any little corner of your bathroom, office, kitchen, living room or bedroom.
To replicate the look, take your planter (would also work great with a cool coffee mug) to your greenhouse or home improvement store so you can correctly fit the plant.

These succulents and cacti ranged from $2.95-$5.95 for a 2 inch-er at my local greenhouse.

If the planter does not have draining holes in the bottom (which mine don’t) I don’t like to permanently transfer the plant from the disposable plastic cup to the planter.  You absolutely can however, you’ll have to fill the bottom with rocks and charcoal first before adding the soil and plant to act as your drainage.  I’m not comfortable enough in my green-thumb-ness to still not over-water so here’s what I do….once you’ve correctly fitted the plant in your planter, add some styrofoam to the bottom of the planter.  That will keep your plant from falling to the bottom and give the appearance of height.

When the plant needs water I take the plastic cup out, put it in the sink and give it a good gentle shower soak.
I allow it to sit in the sink for about 10 minutes while it drip-drains off the excess water.

Once water isn’t dripping out the bottom of the disposable plastic cup anymore, I place it right back in the planter and enjoy.  With succulents you want to re-water when the soil is about 80% dry.  With cactus I wait until the soil looks completely dry before I re-water (which is sometimes up to 2 weeks).  This technique works with smaller plants or large.

I’ve found that these little planters are perfect gifts for anyone, any occasion.  Husbands, teachers, friends, moms, dads, the person who has everything.

I even broke tradition and gave one as a baby shower gift for my friend’s baby room dresser instead of the 30 onsie’s she received.

Fab.com has several of these fun planters at any price point.  They are also the site I love to go to when looking for unique items that you don’t find replicated at every other store.

For some exciting news…Fab.com is giving away $1000. to use on their site for whatever your heart desires.

What kind of plant is the big leafy one that is in the picture with the cactus and the succulent. Is it hard to maintain indoors?

Thank you for the tip. Didn’t know that one with the styrofoam. I like your planters.
