To say my house was in a state of complete and utter chaos would be putting it mildly. As you know we are finishing our basement. There is a layer of dust and powder on every surface of the house, upstairs and downstairs. Everything that was neatly stored in the basement is now haphazardly stored in upstairs corners of bedrooms. We just finished slapping on a coat of primer and are ready for the next step.
Next up tile. We just need it here…date to be determined.
As if finishing a basement wasn’t project enough, I thought I’d dig my hands in to several projects at one time. I love testing my stress limits boundaries and seeing how cockamamie-crazy I can make myself and the people around me.
Our contractor is a sweet, retired man who does meticulous work. He lives a couple hours away so he drives down to town just to work on our house half the week then goes home the rest of the week. When he’s here we’ve got to take advantage and keep him busy. The other morning he came up the stairs and told me he was at a standstill waiting for materials. So at 8am, I made the not-so-well-thought-out decision to have him put paneling up in my bedroom. I’ve had my whole room decorated in my head but wasn’t really ready to start working on it until the basement was finished and boxes were moved out of my room. So in my hideous, hot pink flowered flannel pajamas I dragged everything to the center of the room so the paneling project could begin. He put it up in a flash…a project that would have taken me 2 months. Well worth the money. You should have seen the look on my Mr.’s face when he came home and walked in the construction zone of a room. Priceless! Filling holes, caulking gaps, priming and painting is going to be a beast.
The dresser and changing table at the foot of the bed (no. Literally. At. The. Foot. Of. The. Bed.) is making my eye twitch but it’s been super motivation to get moving on caulking and painting. Psst. I’ll let you in on one more bit of news…I’m selling just about everything and starting fresh over. Remember this lovely bedroom?
It’s all for sale. Bed, dresser, nightstands, lamps, yellow trays, bedding…more on all that later.
Seeing progress in the bedroom got me pumped to get “Bedroom Makeover” underway so I dragged one of the $10. nightstands I scored at a yard sale in the driveway yesterday morning.
This time in my blue pajamas I thought I’d just sand the top to see how easy it would be. Covered with dust I figured why stop there.
So I sat in a pile of sand dust and finished the whole thing up while two of my boys went to the neighbors yard and brought home a frog.
After a few funny stares from neighbors I took the hint that the whole sanding at 11am in my pajamas in the driveway wasn’t a good look for the neighborhood.
The other major project that we’ve put off for 2 years is painting our 15 interior doors. Luckily they came primed so you really couldn’t tell they weren’t in a finished state. Until grimy little hands dirtied them up (which you can’t wipe primed doors) so now we HAVE to paint them. We woke up to this today:
Seeing as how we’ve completely procrastinated all our good weather away we are tackling the doors this weekend. Old man winter is just around the corner and it’s time to paint these suckers up. Please send prayers it warms up again for the weekend (and that I can stay sane amongst all these projects)!

Wow! Love your dream bedroom. It is loverly. Snow already? I guess I won’t share with you that it was in the 80s in Virginia today! By the way, found your site via YHL and now check you daily. Love your style!
Michelle Hinckley says
Thanks Ang! It’s coming together slowly but surely. Thanks for your daily visit! Much appreciated!

I am lovin’ your master bedroom walls! It will all come together shortly and be fantastic! Snow? Already? You must have extremely cold winters.
Michelle Hinckley says
Hi Darnetha,
Yes, very cold indeed. Thanks for the reassurance about my walls. I’ll be honest, I was a bit nervous but I know one solid coat of paint will make them less bold.
Thanks!

Good luck!! Lovin the start of your master and wow, what a steal for those nightstands! great find! I’m w/you, my hand is dipped in 20 different projects right now. Have a great weekend!
Michelle Hinckley says
Hi Kim,
Those kind of steals rarely come along when it comes to me and yard sales. I still can’t believe how luck I was. A fresh coat of paint and they’ll be even better (I hope). ๐

Hi! I’m a fairly new reader and I just love your style! In fact I’m hoping you’re including the wingback chair in your list of things for sale?
Michelle Hinckley says
I probably shouldn’t have mentioned I was selling things because I got a dozen requests for that chair and it sold. Darn. Maybe I should go in to business!

Good news – it’s supposed to be a gorgeous, warm, sunny General Conference weekend in SLC. ^_^ I’m personally hoping no more snow makes an appearance until at least November.
Michelle Hinckley says
Amen, sis-tah! ๐

Love the bedroom walls! I am very jealous of those bedside tables. I’ve given up finding a good deal at a yard sale any more. Well, except that my husband came home from a yard sale with 2 custom made, royal blue velvet couches that looked like no one had ever sat upon them. They also look like they came from the dressing room of some 1990s ultra cool boutique. My husband says it’s a great deal since he paid $50 for couches that allegedly cost $3000, but I would have to disagree on that. Oh well. ๐ I hope the weather cooperates for you.
Michelle Hinckley says
What? I HAVE to see these blue sofa! Pictures please!
FancyNancy says
Oh no, I just checked this to see you want a picture. I’ll see what I can do. ๐ I should probably mention that we have a very small house and really no room for TWO more couches. Everyone kept asking “Where are you going to put TWO couches?” Well, I just refer them to prince charming and let him explain that. I’ll work on a pic for you. I thought they looked like the Beatlejuice house but someone else said a boutique dressing room.

Creativity and energy are at their peak when we have ‘too many’ projects ‘cookin on the fire’ – you will complete this and come out of it smelling like a rose – all done to the smallest detail and wonderfully coordinated to your vision. Prayers to you for great weather and smoothly achieved results. I look forward to seeing your photos of the finished look. Take care!
Michelle Hinckley says
Thanks for the reassurance and vote of confidence. You just lifted my spirits as I’m covered in black paint.
Marjan says
Can you please tell me where you got the knobs for the malm dresser? Thank you!!!
Michelle Hinckley says
Believe it or not the dressers are actually custom. They are actually custom but they do look a lot like the Malm’s. I believe I found the hardware at myknobs.com under ring pulls. Hope that helps! Thanks!

Michelle, I love the progress you’re making. I was in your ward for a while, living with my mom (Natalie Christiansen.) We just bought a new townhouse and I’m working on making it as non-generic as possible. Which is basically all it was when we bought it. I’d love to hear basement finishing tips, since we’ll probably take on ours within the next couple years. I also FOR SURE want to hear about anything you’re selling! We really need some interesting pieces to liven things up around here. I’m up at my mom’s a lot, so I could be there in a flash ๐
Michelle Hinckley says
Hi Amber, I’m so glad you stopped by to say hi! I totally recognize you. I hopped over to your blog and you are on your way girl! Love what you are doing over there. I also read your fave color is green. I’m on a serious green kick right now. I’ve got a TON of stuff to sell. Out with the old and in with the new. (Or rather out with the vintage and in with some more vintage). Stay tuned and thanks so much again for saying hi!
Amanda says
Is your bed still for sale? I’ve coveted it for awhile…how much do you want? I wonder if its being white would nix it for the hubs? But if the price was good, I bet I could sweet talk him! Loving the paneling!
Michelle Hinckley says
Bed is for sale yes. It’s currently still being sold at Z Gallerie for $999. Not quite sure what to price it at. Don’t want to give it away but at the same time I want to sell it. Make me an offer. ๐
