Happy 2015! I can’t believe we’re already a week in! Wasn’t Christmas just yesterday?
I always love the time between Christmas and Jan 1st. We usually go to grandma’s in Vegas and just hang out.
It’s the time where I relax, take inventory of life, dream big and make new agreements with myself.
Then we come back home and I start tearing the house up and plan new projects.
This hallway space has been bugging for the past 6 months:
Only thing is…it doesn’t look like that. It currently looks like this:
And right before I took this picture it looked even worse.
The entire hallway was dotted with picture hooks all over the wall.
The idea of a hallway picture gallery was a good idea in theory but not good in reality with a house of 4 rambunctious men. The hallway is narrow. It’s also a jet way for 3 little men who run as fast as they can, arms fully extended like wings of an airplane. In addition to that, if a door gets slammed pictures fall off the wall and broken glass is everywhere. As you can see more than half the pictures have fallen off the wall.
The hallway needs some sort of art and I think I have something in mind that should work.
Let’s talk about this rug runner:
I’m am loving jute rugs right now.
They just look good.
From a practical standpoint…meh.
They’re not exactly the most cushy thing underfoot.
They also shed. A lot.
In fact, when I first got it, it completely clogged up my vacuum and I had to take the entire thing apart.
It sheds less now but there is still a considerable amount fibers all over the place that I’m constantly cleaning up.
I’ve been working with Medallion Rug again to find an area rug that will not only be beautiful but much more practical. You may remember I have a Persian Rug from them that is in my kitchen which I love…
Medallion Rug has thousands of area rugs, new and vintage, to select from but they also have out of this world customer service.
Most people need a rug to fit a space that isn’t standard measurements.
I told them the type of rug I was looking for by way of style, color and size and within a few days they’ve put together a personalized gallery with my specifications.
It couldn’t be easier. Here are a handful of my favorites…
Which is your favorite?
Stay tuned for the reveal.

I was literally going to place an order for a jute runner for our laundry/pantry/mudroom space. You have stopped me! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on them, now I’ll look for something else. Phew!

I like #6. I think it would work fabulously in that space.

Picture hooks in a hallway (narrow or not) is not, to me, a good idea. If I wanted a gallery wall, I would use a museum rail (or, as Amazon refers to it, a “museum-quality art hanging system”). Once the rail is at the top of the wall, one can hang anything (relatively light) which one wants from it, using picture wire (or fishing line). Little boys can hit the frames, and all the frames will do is swing along the wall and knock into one another (they will not fall, but without felt pads on the back, they probably will mark the wall). If you need a place to hang photos (and I liked the old gallery wall), a museum rail is a good option in any case. It’s easy to shift everything around, and one does not put any additional holes into the wall.

gorg rugs. I have been wondering what to do in my two narrow hallways looks like they have some great options! Also Love how you showed the realness of how your gallery wall looks with every day use and kids running up and down. I often thought about that problem! Thankfully you confirmed my suspicions!

I’d love for people to think I live in a glass house with perfectly clean and tidy children but I don’t…and I wouldn’t have it any other way. (Well maybe a little more clean and tidy would do us some good). 🙂 Thanks Katie.

4 or 5 are my votes

I am a purist – and love the beauty of the hardwood floor. My first vote is for NO rug in order to let those beautiful floors do their job and just shine! This permits the wall art to really pop. If you’re really set on having a rug for the space, please consider white, gray or black – plain color, no pattern or print. I love this space – I love the beauty of the lines. These lines deserve to make their quiet and beautiful statement.
Hope all is well for you and your men – Happy New Year – may it be blessed with health and happiness.

I have seen a gallery wall that is more children friendly. She used foam core boards with her pics rubber cemented on. Very safe and no glass or frames to be knocked off. Always love your ideas!
Michelle Hinckley says
I’ll have to do that for sure next time. Thanks Julia!

I love #6, far and away the best pattern, IMO. whatever you choose will look stunning, I’m sure!
