Faux Skin Alligator Matting Project.

December 1, 2010 by Michelle Hinckley |

I have a back log of DVR’d Nate Berkus show episodes that I’ve working to get through. Nate is sooo talented and charming but I admit I have to watch the shows on fast-forward so I can get to the projects.

This morning at 2:30am (dealing with pregnancy insomnia lately) I watched an episode (here)where he took some $7.00, blue faux alligator skin matting and covered the bottom of this West Elm tray. GENIUS!

I’ve been scouring the Internet all morning looking for the source where he found his matting. He said it was only $7.00 per sheet. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks to all the commenters who gave a variety of great sources! Eyeseepretty and Becky found the exact match at Kate’s Paperie here. Way to go girls!

    I found these papers: http://hollanders.com/papers/BrowseCategory.aspx?CategoryID=ed0d0813-540e-496b-8280-47a6a4e41ea9

No purple though. Can’t really tell what his mat is made of, but it looks like it might be vinyl.

I actually made one of these about a year ago. I found an old tray at good will and spray painted it. At JoAnn Fabric they have Faux alligator leather. It is really thick material. I bought about a half yard. Then I hot glued it to the bottom of the tray. I love it. It sits on my large round ottoman and I use it as a drink tray.

Hey Michelle, Check out Homegoods, TJ’s or Marshalls in the holiday wrapping paper section- they have faux alligator silver and red paper out right now and its only $2.99 a roll. A great deal if you like red or silver, but if you are looking for other colors the paper stores are the way to go ๐Ÿ™‚

I broke up with Nate yesterday. I really wanted to like the show, but it’s just.so.boring. There, I said it. Sorry Nate. I had 14 episodes taking up space on the DVR and I had to just make a clean cut.

Why don’t you try SAS in Tucson? They have all kinds of weirdness in there cheap.

BTW, my daughter made you cake plate for a gift for Christmas and the recipient LOVED it. It was a hit!

Thanks for the lovely idea, I have a couple trays that I was wondering what to do with them. I already have some faux allagator, there is a disount fabric store here that sells it for $9 per yd, they have a good selection of colors too.

I also loved this project! And I also bought some faux alligator skin paper to makeover one of the two trays I have sitting in the garage.

And I’m with ya sister – I love Nate but jeez, I just want to get straight to the good stuff (i’m a fast forward queen too) ๐Ÿ™‚
