FAQ Answered Here

September 4, 2007 by Michelle Hinckley |

What color are your hallway stripes?
Unfortunately, I didn’t keep the paint chip with the name of the color. Here’s the formula for Eggshell by Behr at Home Depot. White is “Ultra White” in eggshell by Behr.

What is the name of the paint you used on your yellow dresser?

Behr: Dragon’s Lair.

What color is your living room paint?
It is actually a Glidden paint chip that I had color matched to Behr. Below is a picture of the formula.

What colors did you use in your master bedroom?
See here.

Where did you get your hardwood flooring from?

It is Virginia Mills Handscraped from Lumber Liquidators.

Where did you get your dining room chandelier?

Z Gallerie.

Where are your canvas pictures in your living room from?

They are custom pieces from photographer, Michelle Rasmussen. Check her out here. Size: 30X30.

What do you use to spray your furniture?

When I’m doing a small job I opt for spray paint in a can. When I’m doing a big job I use a spray gun that attaches to my air compressor. Initially I bought a Wagner all in one deal that was under $100.00. It splattered paint everywhere and almost ruined my furniture. I returned it and bought and don’t recommend it.

My spray gun is a Husky, gravity fed gun from Home Depot. I’ve been very pleased with the results.

Here is my Porter and Cable air compressor.

I bought both from Home Depot. Ask a sales associate when shopping, they are very helpful. I’m often asked for tips on getting a good spray. My best advice is read the owner’s manual and follow the directions. I tend to never read the directions and then pay for it later. YES, you do have to strain the paint with cheesecloth first. YES, do dilute your paint with water as per directions. YES, plan to play and practice for a good 10 minutes before starting a project. Once you get the feel of using your sprayer, it’s easy!

Do you sand before painting?

To be honest, 99% of the projects I’ve done I haven’t sanded. I’ve just primed and painted. Not because I didn’t think it needed it but mostly because I get too excited and want to get on with the painting. I think sanding it always a good idea and advocate it as a better surface for your paint to adhere to. In reality, none of my pieces have suffered as a result of me not doing it. But, I’m going to start sanding. Next time.
What is your wallpaper source?

When you spray paint big or small jobs do you put on a topcoat after? i have been finding sometimes the spray paint chips.. any tips?

    Ginabee,
I haven’t ever used a topcoat and haven’t really had too bad of results. I have had a few tiny chips but nothing major. I’ve heard that using a wipe on polyeurathane or polyacrylic will solve that. I’m going to give it a try on my next project.

Just the info I wanted! I’m not sure if you were saying you have a paint sprayer too, or if you just have the gun attachment & air compressor. If you have a sprayer, email me the info.

    Thanks for the link, Michelle!

    Thanks!

    Anonymous,
Dining chairs are from Room and Board. They are pretty bright white. However, my baseboards are painted Ultra Pure White by Behr and it is brighter than the chairs.

I just discovered your website and I LOVE it! I just have one question for you, does your arm ever get tired from spray painting? Everytime I spray paint my index finger and fore arm are sore the next day. What is a DIYer to do?

    Hi Michelle!

I’m new to reading your blog and have a quick question for you. I have recently started painting/spray painting furniture etc. After seeing your paint gun in your faq section, I went out and bought it. However, I do not get a continuos spray with my air compressor. Yours seems to be about the same size. Do you get a continous or intermittent spray?

    Thanks for your help!

  21. Michelle (Three Men and a Lady) says

    August 9, 2010 at 5:29 pm

    Melissa,
I get a continuous spray out of mine. A couple of tips:
    1. Make sure your paint is really thin. Sometimes if it’s too thick it will not be a continuous spray and often times splatter. You can thin it with water. If mine starts to splatter I’ll add more water to thin it out.
    2. Play with the knobs and valves. They will open up your spray nozzle wider.
    Good luck!

Thanks so much Michelle. Looks like your tank is a 6 gallon and mine is 2 gallon. Looks like I’m off to buy a new air compressor!

What do you do to get your grass loking so good?

  33. Michelle (4 Men 1 Lady) says

    September 17, 2011 at 4:09 pm

    Tyson and Stefanie,
I’m glad you think we have lovely grass and I hate to now reveal that it’s not exactly because of our skill. In Arizona we have grass year around. Our summer grass is hit or miss. The heat and sun really burn it up. If we really wanted to keep it pristine we’d leave the water running all day and night. Not practical or environmentally responsible.

In the fall and winter we re-seed with winter rye grass and it is beautiful. The weather is cool and the grass really thrives well and looks like a golf course.

Which I had some better tips. Good luck with that green thumb!

I saw your home featured on Peertopier.com. You have a beautiful home! Can you tell me the height of the stripes on your hallway walls? Also, I have been looking everywhere for a leather ottoman/table (although I need chocolate brown) and it looks like yours is close to the size I need, 48 x 48. Where did you find your white one?

    Thanks, Allison

    Hi Michelle,

I recently bought a vintage dresser with marble top & mirror online. Thougth about sanding it down and painting it – but when it arrived it turned out it had WAX on it instead of varnish….

How do I get off wax in a cheap, quick way? Is there any type of paint that will stay on wax?

    Thanks!
