In case you were wondering, I finally mustered up the courage to ask my neighbor if I could pick some cherries from her tree that hung over our fence (after I had already picked everything I could reach). She told me to help myself. She even said they rarely get around to picking them at all.
WHAT?!
I thought I might be pushing my luck if I asked if I could hop the fence and pick on her side too.
Father’s Day rolled around and I decided to surprise my father, father-in-law and husband with a homemade cherry pie.
I realize it’s never a good idea to try out a recipe for the first time on a special occasion which is why I bought a Marie Callender apple pie to hide as backup.
It really wasn’t as difficult as thought it would be.
I was envisioning a blue ribbon pie in the making.
They turned out ok.
No one went for seconds.
OK, the Marie Callender pie was a hit.
So much for channeling my inner-Martha.

I have been dreaming of planting a cherry tree after I saw one in a parking lot (!!) recently. We certainly have enough land that I just need to DO it.
I recently reread Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver and there is an AMAZING looking cherry sorbet recipe on there. I think between that recipe and this post, I’ve finally been pushed over the edge! Thanks for sharing.

Yum! My dad loved cherry pie so much that he planted a dwarf cherry tree just so my mom and I could make him pies. It is bountiful every year, and I actually miss picking them. I hope your recipe called for almond extract. You can’t have good cherry pie without almond extract. I hope you’ll keep trying cherry recipes!

Were they sweet cherries or pie cherries? Sweet cherries don’t make great pie, just like red delicious don’t make good apple pie. Pie cherries are too tart to eat plain, but make *perfect* pie.
