Basement Family Room Reveal.

February 18, 2014 by Michelle Hinckley |

Today is the day.
Basement family room reveal day!
This project has been over 2 years in the making…
1 1/2 years of talking and dreaming, 1 year of construction, 4 major arguments, 2,358 gray hairs and 54 trips to Home Depot.
Regardless of the stress and headache, the basement is D-O-N-E and we are H-A-P-P-Y (and still married).

A brief revisit of where we started when we were still bright eyed and bushy tailed…PicMonkey Collage

Enjoy…

For the shelves we used the same wood from Craft-Art that we used for the bathroom vanity.

I love it! Basements that are nice and functional are so nice- like a bonus. Where is that black chair in the corner from? I love it!

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      February 18, 2014 at 2:37 pm

Isn’t that the cutest little chair. I found it at a consignment store for $60. I’m in love with it! Thanks gal!

Yay! I was waiting to see your reveal and I’m not disappointed! I love that you added some color with the pillows and little decorations. I’m still in love with the floor and plank wall! I’m glad your family loves it!

      February 18, 2014 at 3:22 pm

Thanks Zvezda! I actually sewed the pillows then took them to be monogrammed.

Wow! I love this space! I’ve gotta ask–are my eyes playing tricks on me?! I do believe that’s your sofa from your living room, no?

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      February 18, 2014 at 4:02 pm

You saw right. We actually have 2 identical sofas like that. We just moved 1 of them down. πŸ™‚

Looks amazing. Did you do radiant heating under the tile? That’s my only hang up about tile in the basement.

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      February 18, 2014 at 6:13 pm

No dang it! That is my only regret. Argh!

  11. AnnMarie says

    February 18, 2014 at 6:42 pm

It looks amazing! I LOVE the floors, and I never would have guessed from the pictures that they weren’t actual wood! They’re so beautiful and the herringbone pattern is totally classic and chic.

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      February 18, 2014 at 6:55 pm

Sa-weet! Glad to hear that. I was worried it would look like a faux knock-off but I’m really pleased with the result! Thanks for the feedback. πŸ™‚

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      February 18, 2014 at 6:56 pm

I found the sofas years ago from a store that closed down in Tucson. Boo.

  14. Lauren Biard says

    February 18, 2014 at 7:01 pm

Michelle, did you buy the shelving pre-finished or did you do it yourself? I looked at the wood website and it’s a big hard to navigate. Thanks!

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      February 18, 2014 at 7:41 pm

We finished them ourselves using the same technique used for the bathroom vanity: https://4men1lady.com/wood-counters/. You just tell them the size you’d like and they custom cut and send them to you. Hope that helps! πŸ™‚

  21. Krista says

    February 19, 2014 at 1:44 am

It looks great! Just wondering how u attached the shelves to the wall? And what is the distance between each? Thanks!

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      February 19, 2014 at 2:45 am

      Hi Krista,
We actually put the shelves in first then built the drywall up around it (from the bottom to the top). So the shelves are sitting on brackets and drywall which is disguised by the drywall. Hope that helps. πŸ™‚

  22. Lindsey says

    February 19, 2014 at 1:47 am

Beautiful space! I really love your rug and I’m curious if you think it would work in a kitchen under a table? Thanks!

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      February 19, 2014 at 2:40 am

Tile in the kitchen is the perfect material!!!

      • Lindsey says

        February 19, 2014 at 7:03 pm

        Hi Michelle,
I’m actually considering buying the same rug that you have but using it under my kitchen table. I’m just wondering if you think it would be hard to vacuum or keep clean? Is it very thick? Thanks!

        • Michelle Hinckley says

          February 19, 2014 at 7:41 pm

I LOVE the rug but not sure it would be the best under a table. It’s quite chunky which would be tricky with food getting caught between the loops. http://www.Plushrugs.com has a TON of options though. Hope that helps!

Gorgeous job! We’re nearly finished with our basement and it feels SO GOOD, doesn’t it? Where did you get that floor lamp sitting next to that gorgeous black chair (and why don’t I ever find anything like that for $60 at my consignment shop?). The one thing I’ve promised my husband is that he will get a big comfy reading chair, and that lamp looks like the perfect complement. Thanks.

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      February 19, 2014 at 2:44 pm

I have been lucky lately. I found that lamp on clearance at Target for $19. I’ve discovered where they stash clearance items at Target and I always make a B-Line for that area first thing whenever I go there. Please share pics of your finished basement. It feels so good to have a space to spread out!!! Best!

Thanks Crystal! It’s tongue and groove. πŸ™‚

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      February 22, 2014 at 5:08 pm

Great room! Can you tell me what finish you selected on the Schoolhouse Electric lights?

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      April 16, 2014 at 6:00 pm

I believe it’s natural brass with a black shade in this fixture: http://www.schoolhouseelectric.com/lighting/wall-sconce-fixtures/princeton-senior.html

How did you mount the shelves?

  38. Kasey Meadows says

    April 17, 2016 at 4:23 am

Michelle, I’m curious about how you trimmed the exterior corners of your tongue and groove. It’s that a special corner trim piece on either side of the fireplace? Or is it just two pieces of trim on either edge to form a corner? I’m considering this for an entry way, but haven’t figure out how to finish off the corner where the hallway meets the living room.

    • Michelle Hinckley says

      April 19, 2016 at 10:49 pm

      Hi Friend,
It’s two pieces of trim to form a corner. If you don’t do that the boards will jut out and look funny with not end piece. Does that make sense? Share pics of your project! πŸ™‚ Hugs, Michelle
