When we did our whole house renovation about 3 years ago we also added a basement apartment.
Although fully functional, it’s always sort of felt not completely done.
Because it’s a basement apartment kitchen it’s not something that one would want to throw a whole lot of money in to.
It’s pretty Ikea-ized.
Cabinets from Ikea, butcher block counters from Ikea, the island is from Ikea…and even though it’s not our main kitchen it still takes a beating and has held up even better than our main kitchen.
To help the space feel a little more finished we decided to have the back splash tiled in leftover subway tile that was used in this bathroom. The tile is from The Tile Shop and I love the shade of white which is much more of a cleaner, starker white than the subway tile from Home Depot.
Now we just needs some stools and accessories.
See our IKEA island hack here.
See the apartment basement bathroom.

Does someone live here? Do you rent this out!! Super cute!!

It’s really a mother-in-law suite. 🙂

looks great! Is there a reason as to why you decided to install a basement apartment?? Curious minds want to know! :o)
Michelle Hinckley says
I should technically call it a “mother-in-law” suite…for aging parents.

Do you think you’ll ever do a non white subway tile back splash? I’d like to see your take on something with color!
Michelle Hinckley says
One day. One of the reasons I do white subway is it’s neutral, classic and affordable. I can get it at most any hardware store. 🙂
