A few choice words and guest blogging.

October 19, 2010 by Michelle Hinckley |

This week I’ll be participating in a series over at 6th Street Design School on how kids and good design can co-exist.
After I submitted my thoughts on kids and design, this happened…

While on vacation I wandered through Z Gallerie. I happened upon the “sale” section and found a yellow container for 70% off. Score! I had the sales woman wrap it up ever so carefully for it’s journey from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas and then Tucson. Everytime anyone opened up the back of the car I barked to be careful of my container.

Then…when unloading the car…my 3 year old jumped in the back of the car under the not so super, supervision of my husband.
Crack.

I said a few choice words in my head and moaned the break of my container.
“It’s okay, it’s only a thing,” I tried to console myself, (but c’mon I had it less than 24 hours).

You know how that conversation goes, right?

So my final contention is that kids and design can co-exist as long as you turn the mishaps to the back where no one can see them.

Hi! Found your blog through Janell’s. Read through the last several posts; just love them. Love the way you capture the essense of what you are trying to convey, both in pictures and words, and with elegantly restrained, yet witty prose.

I remember my Dad bringing me a plaster of paris trout for which I cherished. I was showing it to my neighborhood friend and he drop kicked it like a football. I was crushed!….and I’ve been screwed up ever since!
Maybe I shoulda tried glueing it back together.

I have so been there too. I think that just about every lamp has some kind of glue keeping it all together, but that’s okay — The kids are gone now and each one of those scratches and glue creases brings back memories for me, and I love that! What I wouldn’t give to have them all home again.

I’ve been following your blog for some time now and thoroughly enjoy it. I would love for you to visit my blog and if so inspired, please follow me, as well.

Love the attitude. Spoken like a good mom! You could hide the cracks with a nice floral design, using acrylics or ceramic paste. This might be a blessing in disguise ๐Ÿ™‚

    oooooo.
    so sorry about that!
i hate it when stuff like that happens.
    ๐Ÿ™
i think the REAL reason health prefessionals are always urging pregnant women to practice “breathing techniques” isn’t so much for the labor and delivery, but for the next few years of broken urns, magic-markered walls, and spilled nail polish. not to mention all the poop…
but man, you really did a great job of fixing that container!

Awhh… I am so in love with those three jars, I can’t tell you how MAD at myself I am for not getting them when I first saw them. I was trying to be thrifty and wait until they went on sale but I must have missed the sale…super sad, but yours (your one) looks great!!

I recently discovered your blog – I LOVE your style! I am curious what type of glue you used to put that piece back together. I have a few dishes (mugs with broken handles, a plate snapped in two) that I’ve been meaning to fix. Do you know of a glue that is food safe, non-toxic? Thanks!
