For the past couple of weeks I’ve been teasing you with pink flamingos and buzz of monumental news.
Nope, we’re not moving to Florida (although I’ve visited St. Augustine, FL once and it was lovely).
Nope, we’re not having a baby girl (boys are wonderful but you all know I’ve also always wanted a girl…4men1lady lives on).
Drum roll…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
We’ve become owners of a cute little mom-and-pop shop here in Salt Lake City, UT called The Old Flamingo which carries eclectic and vintage finds.
You may recall me sharing my love for this little shop before. Here are just a few treasures I’ve found there:
and this one…
then this one…
as well as this one…
What makes The Old Flamingo unique is that it is run by approx 10-15 tenants who rent space from T.O.F. much like a furniture cooperative. They each sell their own finds at the store as well as work one day a week manning the shop. They sell vintage items, new items, collectibles, jewelry and furniture. You name it, it’s most likely been through the shop. In addition to being a new owner I will also have my own space to sell my own treasures that I’ve found over the years. So you’ll be seeing things like…
For those of you who have been wanting to buy my pull-down maps…they are at the store and going fast.
Here’s a little snippet of what’s currently going on in my space.
The Old Flamingo was opened 5 years ago by Peter and Missy Coombs…two of the nicest, most fair and caring people you will ever meet. Seriously. I was one of their first customers and have kept in good touch with them over the years. When I found out they were ready to retire and sell the store I mentioned to the Mr. He immediately jumped all over the idea, MUCH TO MY SURPRISE. Mind you, I’m a big dreamer but it’s not my personality to jump off any ledges. He’s been the moving force behind this train (probably because he’d like me to finally clean out the shed and start making money off my hoarding tendencies). So here we are, after months of investigating, research, negotiations and training…the new owners of The Old Flamingo. Jake will still keep his full time job but we’ll be doing this as a family.
Over the past few months I think I’ve gotten as much a sleep as a new momma with a newborn baby. I never knew how much time and energy went in to owning your own brick and mortar shop. Contracts, agreements, inspections, interviews…yadi, yadi. On the flip side there’s re-branding, re-designing, concepts, shopping…that’s the fun stuff. In the next few months the store will go through a re-branding overhaul. New website, front desk, social media blitz’s, merchandise…it’s gonna be fun.
Please come in, check us out, buy something and wish us well. While you’re there, stop in at the greatest little cafe whom we share a lobby with called Roots Cafe. While you’re waiting for your table come on in and browse. Also, we’re looking for new tenants who have a love for picking and want to have their own little space to sell their finds. Please contact me at smhinckley(at)yahoo(dot)com.
Please be sure to follow us on social media. Like I said, we’ll be going through some updates and changes so keep tabs on us for all our latest finds and treasures.

Congratulations Michelle!!! So very happy for you. I’ve read your blog for a number of years and love your aesthetic. I also recently started my own business and it is soo much work, but incredibly fun and rewarding when it’s YOURS. I live in Iowa so a trip to the shop isn’t likely in the near future, but I will look forward to watching your re-branding magic and maybe some items might be for sale on the website…. 🙂 Congrats again!

Thanks so much Kate! Yes, the work is major but so rewarding and invigorating. If you ever come to SLC, please stop in!

What a dream! You will be fantastic at this. I would absolutely love to do something like this. The next time I’m in Utah I will definitely try and stop by. Once my husband is done with residency I want to start my own textile company. I think what you are doing is just awesome. What a fun creative outlet.
